Bandung, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 – The Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD) at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) welcomed representatives from PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol Tbk to discuss potential collaboration in developing trash interceptor technology for the Ancol area.

This visit marks the initial step in exploring a partnership between FTMD ITB and PT Ancol to support sustainable environmental management, specifically targeting waste management in Ancol’s coastal zones. A primary focus of the discussion was the development of a trash interceptor system designed to mitigate waste flowing from rivers into the sea.

Representatives from Ancol noted that the majority of waste in the area does not originate from visitor activities but is instead carried by river currents that discharge into the ocean. This presents a unique challenge for coastal environmental management, necessitating precise and adaptive technological solutions.

In line with these efforts, PT Ancol is currently undergoing a rebranding toward a green and sustainable concept known as “Green Ancol.” While Ancol currently utilizes a waste management system adopting Swedish technology, further development is required, particularly for systems that can capture trash before it enters open waters.

FTMD ITB provided technical perspectives regarding the design process tailored to specific field conditions. The development plan is currently in its early stages, focusing on concepts and prototypes that will be further evaluated.

As a follow-up, both parties plan to conduct a field survey at Ancol to comprehensively identify site conditions and evaluate existing equipment. This process will also include a reverse engineering approach to optimize current systems and adapt them to local requirements.

The delegation from PT Ancol was warmly received by the Dean of FTMD ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hermawan Judawisastra, M.Eng., alongside Prof. Ir. Rachman Setiawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Ir. Vani Virdyawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., and Dr. Eng. Ir. Firman Bagja Juangsa, S.T., M.Eng. The involvement of these experts reflects FTMD ITB’s commitment to applying engineering science to solve real-world societal and environmental issues.

Through this collaboration, FTMD ITB and PT Ancol aim to develop technological solutions that are not only effective in waste handling but also support the transformation of tourist areas into eco-friendly destinations. This initiative is part of a collective effort to promote the implementation of sustainable technology in urban coastal environments.
