Exploring the Double Degree Experience: Faza’s Journey Between Two Educational Cultures
Muhammad Faza Abel Jonggara Marpaung (International Undergraduate Program Aerospace Engineering, class of 2020) participates in the International Double Degree Program organized by the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD) ITB. This program collaborates with leading overseas universities, including Coventry University in the United Kingdom. Under the 3+1 scheme, Faza completed three years of study at ITB and is now in his fourth year at Coventry University, focusing on Applied Mechanical Engineering. Through this double-degree program, Faza can earn dual degrees from both institutions.
The Reason Behind Choosing a Double Degree
In an exclusive interview with the FTMD ITB Media Team, Faza revealed his motivation for choosing a double degree from the International Mobility options offered by FTMD ITB. For him, it was an academic achievement and an opportunity to delve into different cultures and educational systems. Moreover, he wanted to understand Indonesia’s issues from an international perspective and adopt cutting-edge technology that could be applied back home.
Benefits Gained from the Double Degree
Faza shared his valuable experiences during his studies in England. Beyond academics, he was enriched with invaluable socio-cultural experiences. One important lesson for him was about tolerance, experiencing firsthand how Muslims in England practice their faith amidst cultural differences.
Additionally, Faza found that awareness of sustainability issues in England is higher, with initiatives and facilities supporting an eco-friendly lifestyle. He was also impressed with the sustainable transport system, which made traveling to various places easy.
In the academic aspect, the double degree program opened new horizons for Faza. He could access different learning models and experience a more dynamic classroom atmosphere with more proactive students. Furthermore, the unique advantage of having two supervisors from ITB and Coventry University made it easier for him to complete his final project. He also noted that Coventry University only requires a final presentation after completing the project, unlike ITB, which mandates a final defense as a graduation requirement.
Faza is currently focused on his final project, “Simulation of Aircraft Safety Strategies for Vicinity Drone Operations.” This research is familiar to him, as he has successfully published two international papers on it. Faza believes obtaining dual degrees from two prestigious institutions will be a significant advantage when he enters the industry.
Message for Future Generations
Faza hopes more students will follow in his footsteps and explore the double degree experience. This program offers unique learning experiences and opens minds to the global perspective crucial in this era of globalization.
Through his challenging educational journey, Faza has proven that stepping out of one’s comfort zone can bring many benefits for oneself and society in the future.
