Bandung – In a meaningful initiative, the family of Alm. Muhammad Rasyid Ghifary, Mechanical Engineering student ITB class of 2021 who tragically passed away during an extracurricular activity, has collaborated with the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD) ITB and the ITB Architecture Student Association (IMA-G) to organize a design competition for the renovation of the FTMD Student Mosque. This program represents a form of charitable endowment (amal jariyah) from student’s family, serving as a dedication to honor their son by providing a lasting benefit to other students.

The family’s desire to renovate the mosque near FTMD’s Student Corner stems from their deep love for Alm. Rasyid. They envision the mosque as a more comfortable and representative space for students to pray. In collaboration with FTMD and IMA-G, the mosque renovation was turned into a competition open to all ITB students.

Launched on July 12, 2024, the competition invited participation from ITB students, requiring at least one team member to be from the Architecture or Interior Design program. Each team could consist of up to three members. A total of 24 teams registered, and 16 design submissions were collected by the deadline on August 16, 2024.

The judging process to determine first and second place winners took place between August 17-21, 2024, led by a panel of architectural experts. Simultaneously, voting for a “fan favorite” winner was conducted through the Instagram account @arsitenar, allowing the public to choose their preferred design.

On August 22, 2024, the competition results were officially announced on Instagram.

  • 1st Place: Design No. 17, Surau Al Hindsyy
  • 2nd Place: Design No. 16, Barat
  • Fan Favorite: Design No. 15, Yanaghra

Yanaghra

The Yanaghra design symbolizes the Light of Civilization, the Footprints of Faith, and Progress. It portrays a place of worship as a symbol of civilization, focusing on inclusivity and comfort. The ablution facilities are designed to ensure privacy and convenience for all worshippers, both men and women. Additionally, its accessible and user-friendly features highlight the values of unity and equality in worship.

The next stage of this project involves the design revision process. During this phase, the winning teams will receive feedback from the judges on several aspects of their designs, such as adding curtains for the women’s ablution area, modifying the shoe storage space, and simplifying the façade. Intensive discussions with FTMD representatives will also be held to ensure the revisions meet the needs and expectations of the community.

The judges for the competition included T.M. Aziz Soelaiman, S.T., M.A. from the Architectural Design Research Group and Suhendri, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. from the Building Technology Research Group. Both are senior lecturers in SAPPK ITB, with extensive expertise in building design and technology.

This renovation project, intended to be a charitable endowment, represents more than just the physical transformation of a place of worship; it is a testament to the family’s dedication and love for the FTMD student community.

More than just a physical renovation, this initiative is a poignant example of how loss can inspire the creation of something greater and more meaningful for the wider community. The mosque renovation is expected not only to provide a better space for students to worship but also to serve as a symbol of unity, collaboration, and solidarity among ITB students.
