Bandung – The Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD ITB) welcomed a delegation from National Formosa University (NFU), Taiwan, on October 17, 2024. The visit focused on exploring collaboration opportunities in aerospace research, particularly in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aircraft maintenance, and student exchange programs.

Founded in 1980, National Formosa University is a public university in Yunin County, Taiwan, known for its strong industry partnerships. The university’s slogan, “Enrollment is Employment,” reflects NFU’s commitment to bridging education with career opportunities, especially in the context of Industry 4.0 education.

During this meeting, the NFU delegation, led by Dr. Frank Lin, discussed various topics, including potential research collaboration and academic programs with FTMD ITB.

The main topics covered during the visit included research on UAVs and aircraft maintenance. Dr. Frank Lin explained NFU’s research on renewable energy-powered UAVs, aligning with global efforts toward green technology and sustainable energy. NFU has taken significant steps to incorporate this innovation into its academic research.

FTMD ITB introduced its UAV-focused research projects as well. Dr. Ing. Javensius Sembiring, S.T., M.T., presented his team’s work on developing a deep learning-based control system for tilt-rotor UAV path navigation.

Additionally, Dr. Yazdi Ibrahim Jenie, S.T., M.T., shared his research on developing micro-UAVs for commercial aircraft inspection. These smaller, more agile UAVs are expected to perform aircraft inspection tasks more quickly and efficiently, offering new solutions for future aircraft maintenance.

The visit also highlighted opportunities for students from both institutions. Discussions included NFU’s “3+2” program, allowing students to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years, earning a dual degree.

Both institutions are also exploring various student mobility programs, including international competitions and joint research on UAVs and aircraft maintenance. This program is expected to foster creativity and innovation among students from both sides, while strengthening international academic and research ties.

The visit demonstrated a shared vision between FTMD ITB and NFU in aerospace research and development. Both institutions hope this collaboration will lead to concrete projects that benefit both campuses and contribute to advancements in aerospace technology at the international level.

With its strength in aerospace research and technology, FTMD ITB continues to expand its global network. This visit marks a promising step towards creating a greater impact in the fields of education and the aerospace industry.
