The Journey of an International Student from Tanzania at ITB: Bridging Mechanical Engineering and Geothermal Energy
Bandung – Idrissa Abalhassan Jaha, an international student from Tanzania currently pursuing a Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung (FTMD ITB), shared his journey in advancing geothermal energy research in Indonesia. Enrolled under the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Idrissa described his experience at ITB as one of the most transformative phases of his life.
From the very beginning, Idrissa experienced ITB’s progressive and dynamic academic environment. He was warmly welcomed by lecturers, researchers, and fellow students who were not only highly competent but also genuinely supportive.
“I immediately felt accepted and inspired to continuously grow,” he said.
His research focuses on the thermo-economic optimization of geothermal power plant design. The study integrates reservoir modeling, power plant engineering, and economic analysis—representing a multidisciplinary approach that involves cross-departmental collaboration between Mechanical Engineering and Geothermal Engineering at ITB.
Idrissa emphasized that one of ITB’s greatest strengths lies in its robust research network.
“Thanks to ITB’s extensive and well-established research collaborations, I was able to access field data from PLN. This significantly enhanced the practical relevance and depth of my research,” he explained.
Beyond academic challenges, the doctoral journey has also shaped his personal resilience. Idrissa shared that he learned valuable lessons in patience, perseverance, and the importance of collaboration. The Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship (KNB) provided by the Indonesian government played a crucial role in enabling his academic journey in Indonesia.
Outside of his studies, the city of Bandung offered a warm and enriching experience. Its rich culture, the friendliness of the local community, and its comfortable urban atmosphere made Bandung feel like a second home to him.
“My journey at ITB is not merely about pursuing a degree, but also about personal growth, new discoveries, and broadening my horizons,” he concluded.
