ITB Students’ Achievement in the International Contest ASHRAE Student Design Competition
An outstanding achievement was attained by students of ITB in an international contest “ASHRAE International Design Competition 2016”. The contest was held by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers). The team from ITB consists of four students from FTMD (Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) Mechanical Engineering Major and one student from SAPPK (School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Development) Architecture Major. This team advanced to achieve a second position in the category of Applied Engineering Challenge. This competition has held since 2006. This year is the second year ITB team obtained achievement consecutively. Previously in 2015 FTMD student team from Mechanical Engineering major successfully achieved second position in the same category.
In this year contest, the category of Applied Engineering Challange has a theme “Think Globally, Act Locally”. With this theme students were challanged to brainstorm a solution for the problems around them, especially for the continuous development. This ITB team consists of Bernard Tristian (13113003), Avip Noor Yulian (13113101), Daniel Christopher (13113070), Dennis Setiawan (13114023), and Victorina Arif (15213091) with the supervision from Mechanical Engineering Major lecturers, Dr. Eng. Pandji Prawisudha and M. Agus Kariem, Ph.D. The concept submitted by this team is about “Low-Energy Paddy Vertical Farming” which designed to solve the huge primary food demand in highly populated as in Jakarta. By using multistory building as a subtite for conventional paddy field, the same productivity can be attained from this small compartment, but more energy-efficient because this design do not need the electrical input from PLN. This urban farming concept is hoped to shorten the distribution chain, thus the consumer will purchase rice in a more wallet-friendly cost.
From this achievement, ITB team will attend and present their concept in ASHRAE Winter Conference which will be held on 28th of January until 1st of February 2017 in Las Vegas, United States.
